Alex Ovechkin and Maria Kirilenko are engaged!

After dating for a little more than a year, Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and Russian tennis player Maria Kirilenko are engaged. Ovechkin confirmed the news himself Monday morning on Twitter.

Back in September, when Ovechkin arrived in Washington to prepare for the start of the 2012-13 season before it was derailed by the lockout, the left wing discussed how much fun he had playing the role of doting boyfriend during the offseason.

Ovechkin spent the summer attending all of Kirilenko’s tennis tournaments, including Wimbledon and the 2012 London Olympics, serving as an occasional practice partner and carrying her bag.
Maria Kirilenko arrived in Sydney for the Australien Open with her new engagement ring and spoke for the first time since her ice-hockey superstar boyfriend Alex Ovechkin popped the question on New Year's Eve.
Despite being one of the most notable couples in world sport, there was no chance for the pair to enjoy their exciting news with Kirilenko on a flight to Sydney just a few days after they announced their engagement to the world on Twitter.


Ovechkin, who is playing in Russia because of the ongoing NHL lockout, tweeted a picture of the pair standing next to a Christmas tree with the snazzy new rock on Kirilenko's finger along with the message: "We are engaged !!!!!!!"
Instead of spending time together Kirilenko has spent more than a day flying to Australia where she has swapped the familiar -10C for the 30C heatwave expected in Sydney.
